Lucky 400 Film 36exp 35mm Color Negative Film
Lucky finally has color negative film again. When C200 was first released, the biggest concern for most people was batch and quality consistency; so after C400 launched, many chose to wait and see before deciding whether to buy.
First impression of Lucky C400: The colors really have a distinct personality👉
Under light, there is a noticeable warm yellow tint; whites and grays are not perfectly neutral, while reds, yellows, and oranges are particularly striking, and the overall saturation is on the higher side. It actually looks quite tasteful when shooting scenes rich in color like old buildings, wet markets, or signage.
The entire roll has a fairly distinct "warm brown retro tone."
Actually, many smaller film brands in recent years have tried to create this nostalgic color palette, but some results differ significantly from official samples, sometimes even exhibiting very coarse grain. C400 manages to achieve this look in certain scenes without becoming too grainy, which I find quite pleasing.
Interestingly, in indoor or artificial light, the color cast isn't as extreme as I imagined in some scenes. When encountering cool or greenish light sources, it sometimes offsets the inherent warm tones; but under warm-colored lights, the warmth intensifies, resulting in very rich yellows and oranges.
Saturated|Warm yellow-brown tone|Prominent reds and yellows|Higher contrast
If we use Ultramax 400 as a reference, Lucky C400 is clearly less clean, stable, and versatile.
But precisely for that reason, it doesn't feel like a "budget version of Ultramax."
C400 has a slightly grittier, more intense, warm-brown retro feel, yet it doesn't sacrifice too much image quality just to achieve that "vintage" aesthetic.
If you're after accuracy and natural tones, this may not be its forte; but for shooting scenes like old districts in Hong Kong, wet markets, or red and yellow neon signs, I actually find it quite fitting.
